Obituary for Frederick Leo Kichman

Frederick Leo Kichman passed February 28, 2019 at age 93.
He was born in Harrisburg, PA June 13, 1925 and was the son of Frederick Conrad Kichman and Carrie Bierbower Kichman. He was the oldest and the last surviving member of his immediate family including 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
Fred attended Penbrook High School but left to enlist in the US Marine Corp in Chicago March 1943 during WWII. He participated in action against the enemy at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands and the occupation of Japan from April 1945 through April 1946. Corporal Kichman returned to the States and received an honorable discharge May 7, 1946 and a commendation from Harry Truman.
Following his discharge Fred joined the Pennsylvania State Police. Sergeant Kichman received an honorable discharge after 31 years of service July 5, 1978 while stationed at the Coudersport Barracks.
In 1965, while stationed in Newville, Fred began working with the Boy Scouts. He continued working with scouting when he was stationed in Shamokin where he worked with Elysburg Troop 247. In 1969 he received the Order of Merit award from the Susquehanna Valley Council and in 1972 earned the Silver Beaver Award for years of service.
Fred was also a volunteer and chairman of the Shamokin and Mt. Carmel Charter of the Red Cross. In 1971 he received a commendation from the PA Department of Health for demonstrating health and well-being of others. Then in 1972 he qualified with the National Aquatic School as a Red Cross Instructor and Multi-media First Aid.
The Shamokin Jaycees awarded him the Distinguished Service Award 1972. He also received the Benjamin Rush Award for Outstanding Health Services Northumberland County Medical Society In 1973.
Fred enjoyed traveling and had visited most of United States in his 5th wheel and on a cruise to Alaska and the Caribbean. He finally settled in Florida where he and his friends participated in Ballroom Dance.
He returned to Pennsylvania each summer to spend time with his children and grandchildren. These visits ended in 2015 due to declining health and he moved to Life Care Center, New Port Richey, FL his final residence in September 2017.
In addition to his siblings Fred was preceded in death by his parents and one son-in-law Thomas Bush.
He is survived by one son, David (Joyce Roadarmel) Kichman, Elysburg PA; and two daughters Elizabeth Bush, Mt. Carmel, PA; and Susan (Marshall) Geiger Midlothian, VA. Eight Grandchildren: Anngela Kichman, Joshua Kichman and his partner Jan Wyant; Stephanie (Tom) Bush McDonald, Kirk Walterick; Jonathan, Katelyn, Aleesha, and Matthew Geiger and five Great Grandchildren Jackson Kichman, Jordan and Gavin Edwards; Tommy and Trevor McDonald.
A memorial will be held at the convenience of the family with military burial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA
