Jack E. Shuttlesworth, 87, of Center Street Ashland. passed away Sunday, April 11th, 2010 at his home. Born in Glen Dower,PA July 2, 1922 he was the son of the late William C. and Annie Buchanan Shuttlesworth. Following graduation from Ashland High School in 1942 he became a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. serving in World War I I in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator and gunner in a dive bomber. Jack worked in the coal industry all his life. He was knowledgeable in operation of heavy equipment. His operating experience coupled with his personality led to a successful career in sales. An all around athlete in his youth, Jack's passion became golf where he excelled . He was a proud supporter of Penn State and a fun loving seasoned traveler. He exemplified the phrase once a Marine, always a Marine. Above all he was devoted to his family. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Ashland; American Legion Post of Ashland serving as Commander for many years.; The Coal Cracker Division of the U.S. Marine Corps; Ashland Elks BPOE 384; Ashland Lodge No. 294 F former Fountain Springs Country Club and countless other organizations . He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Lois (Cleaver) Shuttlesworth,2009 Two brothers one sister preceded him in death: Charles, James Harriet Kaufman. Surviving are one daughter- two sons: Gail wife of Jeffry Hoffman of Gordon,PA; John husband of Mary Shuttlesworth of Ashland,PA.; Steven husband of Susan Shuttlesworth of Pompton Place, N.J.. A brother Robert Shuttlesworth, Wyomissing,PA survives . Five grandchildren survive: Dr. Allison Ray;Lauren Hoffman, Aaron Jack Shuttlesworth Molly Shuttlesworth. One great grandchild David Ray survives. Nieces and Nephews. Religious Service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Ashland, PA, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April 14th, with Rev. Dana Heckman-Beil officiating. Interment at Christ Church Cemetery Ft. Springs, PA. Viewing Tuesday 6:00-8:00 P.M.. at the Kull-Heizenroth Funeral Home and Wednesday 10:00-11:00 AM from Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, N. 9th St., Ashland, PA . Memorial contributions can be made to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation which is part of the National Museum of the Marine Corps,3800 Fettler Park Drive, Suite 104,Dunfries,VA 22025.
