Nan Weller
Nan Weller, 78, of Elysburg passed away Wednesday morning May 14th at Sunbury Nursing & Rehab.
I want to tell you about my sister. My sister Nan passed on Wednesday May 14th. She was my best friend and a friend to so many. She was born August 25, 1946 daughter of Elizabeth Wardrop Weller and Leon Weller.
She graduated from Southern Columbia High School in 1964 and Susquehanna University in 1968, Go Crusaders! She received her Master’s Degree in Music Education from Penn State University.
She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist church in Shamokin where she was the Director of Music, Senior Choir Director and Sunday School Teacher. Music was her life, and she shared her love for music with everyone she came in contact with. As a child she learned to play the flute and continued playing through the years. She sang in our junior and senior church choir and grew up to direct many choral groups. She directed the initial concert in 1976 of the Anthracite Choraliers and many more times over the years. She directed the Community Spirit choral group in Elysburg for the annual community Christmas concert as well as bell choirs for the First United Methodist church in Shamokin and First Presbyterian church in Elysburg.
She was a member and past president of the Cecilian Club. She was an elementary music teacher in the Shamokin Area School District for her entire 35-year career, retiring in 2003. Many children were introduced to music through her making music special in their lives. She played her flute on many occasions such as weddings and funerals as well as the organ.
She also had other interests. As a Girl Scout she got to go to Girl Scout Round Up in Button Bay, Vermont which was a special experience for her. She participated in many church work camps traveling to Arizona and the Dakota’s. She had the opportunity to travel on a mission trip to Uganda. As an extra interest she got her pilot’s license.
We will celebrate her life on May 27th at 6 P.M. at the Shamokin First United Methodist Church, 100 E Sunbury St, Shamokin PA one more rehearsal in her honor and her memory.
